Uncertain Futures

February 7, 2014 by Jennifer Dean

In preparing for a presentation today on early film history I was reviewing some notes and came across one of my favorite quotes from Mary Pickford’s autobiography Sunshine and Shadow. It’s part of a letter written to theatre mogul David Belasco by director William de Mille concerning young Mary’s decision to start making movies: She says she can make a fairly good living at it, but it does seem a shame. After all she can’t be more than sixteen or seventeen […]

Female Vampires at Sundance

January 24, 2014 by William Eaton

I did a lot more watching than reading this week during my first trip to the Sundance Film Festival. I saw some wonderful films and several by female filmmakers – one directed by a female filmmaker that included a female vampire – A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night. I loved it and sincerely hope it gets distribution so it can reach a larger audience… the Hollywood Reporter review acknowledges the wonderful qualities of this film but also expresses my fears in […]

Movies and the Mafia

January 17, 2014 by Jennifer Dean

My reading this week seems to be an appropriate follow-up to Tucker Cox’s post yesterday on guidebooks… after all my reading is part of my travel to Utah. This week I was researching all of the movies I can potentially see at Sundance – my first time attending the famous film festival – and as these things can happen stories of the mafia seem to be following me. I finished Rich Cohen’s Tough Jews last week and then heard stories of Whitey Bulger […]

Making a Getaway to the Movies

January 10, 2014 by Jennifer Dean

This week I started reading a book on the Jewish Mafia passed on by my friend Rick Mester (who read it for research while writing his novel). Tough Jews is one of those non-fiction books that reads like fiction, describing characters in detail and constantly setting the scene for the reader. Of course I could not help but picture it as a movie and had to laugh when I read the scenario below: The troop later found out what had happened. After […]

Reading Masculine/Feminine in film

January 3, 2014 by William Eaton

I have been going through magazines that have piled up over the semester since I have been attending an MFA program at CCNY and just read the November 22nd Hollywood Reporter Directors Roundtable for 2013. The question of what distinguishes a good director from a great director was asked and Steve McQueen (director of 12 Years a Slave) gave my favorite response:  The other day I was watching [John Ford’s] The Searchers, and there is that bit where John Wayne […]

A Week of Reading About the Movies

September 24, 2013 by William Eaton

24 September 2013 Reading Me and You and Memento and Fargo: How Independent Screenplays Work by J.J. Murphy. It explores the distinct narrative features of independent cinema in the United States as compared to traditional Hollywood films. In the opening chapter Murphy provides a wonderful analysis and synopsis of the various banal screenwriting manuals that teach writers the rules of screenwriting. One of my favorite quotes that he shares is from an interview subject of my thesis project and documentary […]

Reading: 10-16 March 2013

March 12, 2013 by Jennifer Dean

Reading 10-16 March 2013 (ZiR) Jennifer Dean, Zeteo Contributor [One in an ongoing series of posts. For the full series see Zeteo is Reading.] 12 March 2013 On the subway ride home from the company that rented me equipment for my weekend film shoot I started reading Martin Scorsese’s introduction to Vachel Lindsay’s The Art of the Moving Picture. Scorsese decided to publish books on film, paying homage to the books that affected him as a youth. He writes: Although film is primarily […]

Reading: 27 January-2 February 2013

January 28, 2013 by William Eaton

From Tyler Peckio, Zeteo Contributor 28 January 2013 Hollywood loses the plot Every Thursday for the past month myself, and a few friends from my undergraduate studies, meet up and discuss an agreed upon book. We always make an effort, no matter how abstract the content is, to establish connections between the material and our current lives (whether in an existential, political, economical, or societal way). Philosophical material should be read as a living, breathing, constantly evolving thing—not as something existing in […]
