The “P” word: mediated pornography

January 27, 2014 by Alexia Raynal

My friend was a little upset that Margret Grebowicz did not include graphic evidence of her research in her book Why Internet Porn Matters. I, on the other hand, was a little relieved. Reading a book about pornography without the images seemed less daunting than reading an illustrated version of it. Granted, there is descriptive narrative in the book, but Grebowicz seems to focus more on language and power than the visuals. This is what I found most interesting in the first two […]

Female Vampires at Sundance

January 24, 2014 by William Eaton

I did a lot more watching than reading this week during my first trip to the Sundance Film Festival. I saw some wonderful films and several by female filmmakers – one directed by a female filmmaker that included a female vampire – A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night. I loved it and sincerely hope it gets distribution so it can reach a larger audience… the Hollywood Reporter review acknowledges the wonderful qualities of this film but also expresses my fears in […]

Eudaimonia or “Human Flourishing”

January 23, 2014 by William Eaton

In The Art of Travel, Alain de Botton writes about travel and art crossing paths. Edward Hopper’s paintings illuminate a traveler’s introspection en route, be it by car, train or plane. Flaubert’s urge to engage the exotic – his destination was Egypt – sheds light on why we must travel. All wayfarers share some of von Humboldt’s insatiable curiosity. Wordsworth’s poetry rejuvenated the big idea that the antidote for city dwellers’ ills is a trip to the countryside, England’s Lake […]

A Labor of Love – Charles Olson

January 22, 2014 by William Eaton

Modernist Charles Olson (1910-1970) viewed poetry as a means of projecting energy. As a poet, essayist, and teacher, he had a  far-reaching influence. Rejecting the confines of academic poetry, Olson believed that sound was the way to reach the reader: the HEAD, by way of the EAR, to the SYLLABLE the HEART, by way of the BREATH, to the LINE Here’s a sample of his work, which I will allow to “speak” for itself: THE GRANDFATHER-FATHER POEM rolled in the […]

Sitting Pretty

January 21, 2014 by William Eaton

My husband has to travel for work fairly often, and I am lucky enough that I usually get to tag along. When I accompany him on his trips, I know I will end up being a co-pilot of sorts, which I actually enjoy. This means I won’t be lounging in a coffee shop with a book all day, so I have to plan my reading accordingly. On these types of trips, I try to travel with two books: a novel […]

Childhood: the value of secrecy

January 20, 2014 by Alexia Raynal

(Or “Everybody is entitled to dream, even those who came before MLK”) Eugene Field was an American writer best known for his children’s poetry, reports Wikipedia. I, on the other hand, report that translating a poem of his can be quite a challenge. Mr. Field—no doubt—had his own understanding of what childhood meant. And in this particular case, I am sure he sensed that children value secrecy—perhaps just as much as we do. These are the last three verses of […]

Movies and the Mafia

January 17, 2014 by Jennifer Dean

My reading this week seems to be an appropriate follow-up to Tucker Cox’s post yesterday on guidebooks… after all my reading is part of my travel to Utah. This week I was researching all of the movies I can potentially see at Sundance – my first time attending the famous film festival – and as these things can happen stories of the mafia seem to be following me. I finished Rich Cohen’s Tough Jews last week and then heard stories of Whitey Bulger […]

A Canon of “Must-Sees”

January 16, 2014 by William Eaton

Guidebooks (GBs) have set the sightseeing agenda for millennia. They defined the “7 Wonders of the World,” now groups of sites – ancient, modern, architectural, and so on. Herodotus’ travelogues (5thC, BCE) remain among the most popular guidebooks ever written. GBs established Jerusalem as the new Delphi for medieval pilgrims. They instructed young noblemen grooming for careers in politics or diplomacy on the do’s and don’ts of the obligatory Grand Tour of Europe in the 18th century. GBs’ made the Cathedral at […]

Amiri Baraka and Suppose Sorrow Was a Time Machine

January 15, 2014 by William Eaton

We lost Amiri Baraka (1934-2014) last week, at least in body. Writer, poet, dramatist, and civil rights activist, Baraka was slight in stature but grand in presence, words, and ability to generate controversy. He inhabited multiple spaces—in the form of books such as Blues People: Negro Music in White America (1963) which he wrote when he still called himself LeRoi Jones, never out of print; in politics as he protested unequal treatment of African Americans; in poetry in his association with Ginsberg, […]
