A Red? Blue? Purple State? With Orange Yellow Green Hues!

October 11, 2014 by William Eaton

As the Southern Editor it would be remiss of me not to mention that yesterday evening U.S. District Judge Max Cogburn struck down North Carolina’s ban on gay marriage, opening up the county offices to begin issuing marriage licenses immediately. North Carolina’s marriage ban was somewhat unique in that it was a product of Amendment One, a ballot-initiative that called for a state constitutional amendment confirming that marriage was between only a man and a woman and that any same […]

Voting in the South: Gender and Politics

October 4, 2014 by William Eaton

[print_link] [email_link] Today just a brief thought about my new life in the South. Elections Matter! Having lived in New York all of my voting-age life, I have developed a particular (admittedly luxurious) sentiment about the polls: that I could comfortably vote for a third party candidate that has a platform I believe in, despite the candidate’s minimal to non-existent chance of winning. Those of you who are tuned into the upcoming elections have probably heard the pressure that is […]

NC Women’s Summit Proves I’m not Alone (in the job search)

September 27, 2014 by William Eaton

[print_link] [email_link] In the fancy new Talley Center building at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, the second annual NC Women’s Summit was held on September 26, 2014. Hosted by Women AdvaNCe, “an independent, nonpartisan educational institute dedicated to improving the lives of North Carolina’s women and families,” alongside the NCSU Women’s Center, and the UNC Chapel Hill Southern Oral History Program, the summit set out primarily to bring together NC women and foster conversation that might lead to further activism. […]

“It’s On Us”: Carrying the Weight of Sexual Assault

September 20, 2014 by William Eaton

The Obama Administration has released another Public Service Announcement against sexual assault, this time with the slogan “It’s On Us.” “To stop sexual assault, to get in the way before it happens, to get a friend home safe, to not blame the victim, to look out for each other, to not look the other way, to stand up, to step in, to take responsibility…” Their previous star-packed PSA featured the slogan “One is Too Many.” It notably featured an all male […]

Putting Boundaries on Blurred Lines

September 6, 2014 by William Eaton

[print_link] [email_link] Last year Robin Thicke released his hit single “Blurred Lines,” a song that sparked a great deal of controversy in addition to a great deal of twerking. I wish that Thicke’s song had at least a few quotable lines to bring some attention to a discussion of “blurred lines,” and the truly complicated nature of it, but alas, he gives us little to work with. <I hate these blurred lines/I know you want it/But you’re a good girl/The way you grab […]

A Battling Culture: Football and Domestic Violence

August 30, 2014 by William Eaton

I started playing football with my brother’s friends when I was 8 years old, and though baseball turned out to be my sport of choice, I can understand what love of a sport feels like. With the recent outcry over the NFL’s decision to give a 2-game suspension to Ray Rice after his domestic violence dispute caught on camera, discussion is emerging about how football itself might be at the root of the problem. This week the NFL issued new punishment rules […]

How Humans Relate: Can a Taco and Beer Beat a Bucket of Ice?

August 23, 2014 by William Eaton

Social media has always confounded me for the immeasurable ways that it has so suddenly yet drastically altered our social interactions. Everything that we do and say was built on the foundation of our physical interactions and relationships with other people. In order to survive, we had to be in the same space as other people, and thus we have learned every single physical movement, gesture, facial expression, and not to mention language and voice intonation, in the reflection of ourselves through […]

Paternity Leave and Daddy Blogging: What it Means to ‘Be A Man’

August 16, 2014 by William Eaton

Last week I was away in California for an old friend’s wedding, and a trip up and down the Pacific coast that reunited me with friends I have not seen in some time; since the revolution began in Egypt or since she moved across the country when we were 10 year-old best friends. Although I am planning a wedding of my own, all the talk of marriage and new engagements can be a bit grotesque to me. I was pleasantly surprised, […]

Cat-Calling Caught on Camera!

August 2, 2014 by William Eaton

While I was still living in NYC I had a vision that I would capture footage of the street harassment that I experienced in Brooklyn on a daily basis by wearing a small video camera clipped to my shirt. Of course, I never did acquire that magical camera, (Cat Cam, it would be called), and the vision remained stored in my mind for future execution. My Brooklyn based besty found this video, and forwarded it to me under the subject, “Cat […]
